Welcome to Hanwell Village
A beautiful Ironstone Cotswold Borders village in Northern Oxfordshire
Hanwell is a beautiful small idyllic village of rich historical heritage of approximately 120 houses. It is situated three miles from the centre of Banbury in Oxfordshire and is linked to the town by the Warwick Road (B4100) and the Southam Road (A423) connecting with the small village road.
The majority of the village is contained within a conservation area that has two historic listed buildings on its southern boundary, St. Peter’s Church and Hanwell Castle, together with many old houses and cottages. St Peter’s Church dates back to the C13th and is one of a local group of medieval churches that form the Ironstone Benefice. The grounds of Hanwell Castle contain an observatory and a lake of historical significance. In medieval times the lake was a commercial fish pond that served a wide region. Hanwell’s history extends back to Roman times and the village has strong connections with the English Civil War, being only a few miles from Edge Hill, the site of the first pitched battle. Hanwell also contains the popular Moon & Sixpence pub, an excellent venue to drink and rest after a weary walk or to have a meal. As with any self respecting historical village, Hanwell also has its share of ghost stories. All in all, Hanwell is a very special place. The villagers are very welcoming and have a strong sense of community. They also work hard to preserve their heritage and distinct identity.
