The current Conservation Area Appraisal was approved by Cherwell District Council in 2007 (https://www.cherwell.gov.uk/directory-record/1803/hanwell). Its purpose was to review and update the conservation area designation as necessary. It was previously reviewed in 1995.  As part of the consultation process, the District Council held a public exhibition in Hanwell Village Hall, followed by a public meeting in the evening.

The Appraisal contains an outline of the historical development of the village. There follows a detailed analysis of the established character of the area including its land use, settlement pattern, building types and style, construction materials, features of special interest and means of enclosure.

The Appraisal sets out justification for the enlarged Conservation Area boundary and the effects of Conservation Area designation, together with a management plan of proposals for the preservation and enhancement of the Conservation Area.  The final version of the Appraisal was approved as planning policy by the District Council in August 2007.

As part of the current Cherwell Local Plan Review process, the Parish Council has recently requested (November 2021) that the Conservation Area boundary be amended to include the field on its southern boundary between Park Farm and the Castle Grounds, which forms part of the setting of the Church and Castle (https://www.cherwell.gov.uk/info/83/local-plans/729/planning-for-cherwell—local-plan-review/3).  This is being considered by the District Council as part of future planning policies.  It is expected that the comprehensive Draft Local Plan for Cherwell will be published for public consultation in October/November 2022.
